The Morphic field and Reiki Symbols

How do Reiki symbols work?  Why do we need to be attuned to them?  Can’t we just learn them out of a book?  It’s all about energy fields!

The term ‘morphic field’ was coined by Rupert Sheldrake and explains how information is stored in energy fields.  Sheldrake is a biologist and argues that genetics alone cannot explain why we look the way we do.  Our genetic code is not much more complex than a fruit fly, yet we are obviously vastly different in both form and sophistication.  Sheldrake argues that there has to be an over-riding structure, an energetic memory, that guides the genes and imposes patterns on organisms to help them to develop.  This energetic memory, or morphic field, is developed over generations of evolution and is unique to each species.

“Each individual both draws upon and contributes to the collective memory of the species. This means that new patterns of behaviour can spread more rapidly than would otherwise be possible. For example, if rats of a particular breed learn a new trick in Harvard, then rats of that breed should be able to learn the same trick faster all over the world, say in Edinburgh and Melbourne. There is already evidence from laboratory experiments that this actually happens.”  Sheldrake

Every habit or memory has the potential to form a morphic field.  The more people transmit their memories into the field, the stronger it gets.

“Social groups are likewise organized by fields, as in schools of fish and flocks of birds. Human societies have memories that are transmitted through the culture of the group, and are most explicitly communicated through the ritual re-enactment of a founding story or myth, as in the Jewish Passover celebration, the Christian Holy Communion and the American thanksgiving dinner, through which the past become present through a kind of resonance with those who have performed the same rituals before.” Sheldrake

Our Reiki symbols, through a century of use and intention, have created powerful fields of energy around them.  There is much debate as to where the symbols originated and whether they were used by Usui or simply developed as mantras and tools over the years.  We will never know the truth of how the symbols evolved but these facts do not matter.  What has transpired over time is the morphic fields of the symbols continue to evolve, strengthen and aid us.  Sheldrake states that the more energy is put into the field, the stronger it gets, and the easier it is for someone to integrate into the field.

However, he discusses all these fields as being connected through species, memories, cultural ties, or social bonds of some kind.  As a non-Catholic, I cannot partake in holy Communion –because I am not initiated as a Catholic, I am not in the morphic field, so the ceremony would be totally ineffective for me, I am not part of the field and so will not benefit from its centuries of memory and energy.

Reiki symbols are the same, for each Level 2 student there is at least one attunement, an initiation into the morphic field of the symbols.   This must be done or the student is not integrated into the energy of the field and therefore the symbols have no power for them.   Symbols learnt out of a book or downloaded from the internet cannot be used effectively, because we are still outside of the Reiki symbol ‘field.’

Once attuned to the symbols we can use them effectively and also benefit from all the other practitioners who have used them before us.  For those of us who are ‘old hands’ at Reiki, I’m sure you’ll agree that the symbols continue to grow in strength.  As more and more practitioners use the symbols, they continue to evolve and grow, and we grow with them.  The wonderful thing about morphic fields, especially when they are surrounded with love and goodwill, is we all benefit from the collective consciousness.

Over to you!  What do you think about this Morphic Field theory?  Does it resonate, or do you prefer to look at the symbols differently?
